These Green Woodpeckers seem to spend much of their time on the ground rummaging through grass, probably looking for insects to eat. That might explain their green feathers but the red crest still puzzles me.

Using Photoshop, I tried to get a softer image with more grain and less contrast, all the things most people don't want in their pictures.

This is the result of me trying to be creative with a glass of Sainsbury's spring water during a quiet period earlier today. By the way, the strawberries were half price!

I'm not sure what it's called, but it caught my eye at a local florist. I used a Canon 50mm Compact Macro (borrowed) and a couple of studio flash heads.

Yellow fields

I am totally new to this aspect of photography. A step-ladder got me high enough above the yellow rape flowers to capture this view (I think I should have got closer to that tree). I shot RAW and opened the files in CS3 for processing. I was impressed, initially, by the sunlight filtering through the clouds and illuminating sections of the field but I think the picture could do with a stronger central element.

This junior gymnast is performing an L-seat hold, suspended approximately nine feet from the ground. Needless to say, I had to find a high enough position to shoot from, in order to get that face-to-face effect. But I did wonder if there was enough contrast between the gymnast's skin and the dark-blue background, or even if there needed to be a contrast ...problems, problems.

Luci Martin of the band Chic! In the background you can just about see the famous guitarist/producer Nile Rodgers who, along with bassist Bernard Edwards, created the unique "Chic sound" (the last two neon letters of the band's name are just visible behind the drum kit). Chic produced songs for many big names from Diana Ross to Debbie Harry.

Chaka Khan live at the Hammersmith Odeon. Shot on Kodak VR 400, the most sensitive colour film available at the time (before the release of VR 1000). As usual, I uprated to 800 ISO in order to have any chance of a decent shutter speed. To think all this goes back several years before the first Canon EOS camera came into being! This image was scanned from 35mm film, and has had no additional processing.

This face needs no introduction. Tina Turner is certainly one of the best live performers I've ever seen. This is a snapshot from a concert she did over 20 years ago. I used a couple of rolls of the newly released Kodacolor VR1000, the world's fastest colour film (at the time). This image was scanned from 35mm film, and has had no additional processing.
